If you have just opened a pack, read this before bedtime.
The most common mistake people make with mouth tape is starting with a full night. It is new, it is unfamiliar, and the middle of the night is a bad time to find that out. A few minutes of preparation makes the difference between something that becomes part of your routine and something that ends up in a drawer.
Start during the day
Wear it for twenty or thirty minutes while you are awake and doing something ordinary. Reading, watching something, washing up.
The point is not to test whether it works. The point is that by bedtime, the feel of it is no longer new. Most people find the sensation stops registering after the first few minutes, and it is much easier to notice that happening while you are sitting on the sofa than while you are trying to fall asleep.
Do this once or twice before you use it overnight.
Check you can breathe comfortably through your nose
Only use mouth tape if you can breathe easily through your nose. If you are congested, have a cold, or your nose feels blocked for any reason, skip it that night. It will still be there tomorrow.
How to apply it
Start with clean, dry skin. If you use moisturiser or balm around your mouth in the evening, apply the tape before, not after, or the adhesive will not hold.
Close your lips gently and place the tape centred over them. Press lightly along its length. There is no need to stretch it, pull it tight, or press hard.
One fresh piece each night. The adhesive is designed for a single use, and a reused piece will not sit properly.
How to take it off
Peel slowly. Fast removal is what causes the sting.
Start at one corner and lift gradually rather than pulling straight off. If you have facial hair, peel in the direction the hair grows, not against it. Damp skin helps if you are in the shower anyway.
You can remove it at any point during the night. It is not meant to stay on if you do not want it to.
When not to use it
Do not use it if you have congestion, a cold, or any difficulty breathing through your nose.
It is not suitable for children.
If you have a respiratory condition, sleep apnoea, or any health concern at all, speak with a healthcare professional before you use it.
Remove it immediately if you feel any discomfort.
If it does not suit you
Some people take to it in one night. Others never do, and that is a perfectly reasonable outcome.
